In the post war era of European politics, extreme nationalism was deemed to be suspicious and a unified military alliance was formed with the structuring of the North Atlantic Treaty, NATO in 1949.  A moderate commerce block, the European Coal and Steel Community was established by the Treaty of Paris in 1951, and a collective scientific effort, established the Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nuclréaie in Geneva, Switzerland in 1952, eventually expanding to Organisation Européenne pour la Recherche Nucléaire, more recognizable as CERN. PROJECT POLTERGEIST

In late 1951, two US physicists, Frederick Reines and Clyde Cowan, Jr. began the first experiment in neutrino physics, an enigmatic particle earlier tagged as the “ghost particle,” for its unexplained almost massless properties.  The sub-atomic neutrino had already created enormous frustration for earlier investigators such as Nobel laureate, Wolfgang Pauli.  Frederick Reines and Clyde Cowan designated the experiment, “Project Poltergeist.”In a postwar academic climate, there was, apparent collaboration in the expanding field of sub-atomic science.  Examination of matter in the imperceptible domain of physics held the promise of opportunity after witnessing the grotesque abilities of atomic devastation.  Project Poltergeist sounded friendly, Casper the friendly ghost.

The North American continent continued nuclear research through the three Manhattan Project facilities in Oak Ridge,Tennessee, Los Alamos, New Mexico and Richland,Washington.  Comparable scientific programs for medical, military and space development introduced futuristic research and ignited almost fictional imaginings for space exploration.

Similar but far less visible programs were established in South and Central America through the establishment of state of the art facilities largely funded and organized by ‘former’ German SS officers and specialists, through various political arrangements.
